Also popularly known as Babushka, Breshkovsky was the grandmother of the Russian Revolution. She spent over four decades in prison and Siberian exile for peaceful opposition to Tsarism, acquiring, in her latter years, international stature as a political prisoner. She has been described as Russia's first female political prisoner. Catherine Breshkovsky (real name Yekaterina Konstantinovna Breshko-Breshkovskaya (born Verigo), Russian: Екатерина Константиновна Брешко-Брешковская born 25 January (13 January old style) 1844 – 12 September 1934) was a major figure in the Russian socialist movement, a Narodnik, and later one of the founders of the Socialist Revolutionary Party. ![]()

Call Me by Your Name is clear-eyed, bare-knuckled, and ultimately unforgettable.Īndré Aciman was born in Alexandria, Egypt and is an American memoirist, essayist, novelist, and scholar of seventeenth-century literature. ![]() ![]() The psychological maneuvers that accompany attraction have seldom been more shrewdly captured than in André Aciman's frank, unsentimental, heartrending elegy to human passion. For what the two discover on the Riviera and during a sultry evening in Rome is the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy. What grows from the depths of their spirits is a romance of scarcely six weeks' duration and an experience that marks them for a lifetime. But during the restless summer weeks that follow, unrelenting buried currents of obsession and fear, fascination and desire, intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them. Unprepared for the consequences of their attraction, at first each feigns indifference. Call Me by Your Name is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliff-side mansion on the Italian Riviera. ![]() 5/26/2023 0 Comments A kiss at midnight by eloisa james![]() ![]() ![]() It didn’t help that most of London, her mother included, considered her the luckiest of young women. ![]() An evening spent with her future husband made her feel half cracked. She had always known that she would be Duchess of Canterwick someday, so it made no sense to feel so keenly miserable. Olivia actually had to swallow hard, and sit in the dark carriage by herself a moment, before she was able to pull herself together and follow her sister. Typically, Georgiana did not pair the positive comment with its opposite: Sleep had attractions… but Rupert had few. “Sleeping has its attractions,” her sister agreed, descending from their parents’ carriage before the house. I would rather sleep for a hundred years.” “The curse, it hardly needs to be said, was Rupert’s hand in marriage. “Perhaps our parents forgot to ask a powerful fairy to my christening,” she told her sister Georgiana on their way home from a ball given by the Earl of Summers, at which Olivia had spent generous swaths of time with her betrothed. In fact, the bride-to-be was liable, in moments of despair, to attribute her engagement to a curse. But Olivia Lytton’s was fueled neither by an exchange of assets between like-minded aristocrats, nor by a potent mixture of desire, propinquity, and Cupid’s arrows. Most betrothals spring from one of two fierce emotions: love or greed. Sleeping Giants Book one of the Themis Files ![]() 5/25/2023 0 Comments Alchemy & mysticism alexander roob![]() Starting here gives a solid base to the history of chemistry before the science moves away from pseudoscience into the realms of modernity. With this clarification, the history of chemistry is one of the most ancient lineages and can easily be traced back to the Babylonians and beyond. Despite many incorrect observations and inaccuracies, mixed with mysticism and superstition, the ancient alchemists made many useful discoveries and deserve their place in the history of chemistry. Modern chemistry was built upon a long history of alchemy, which earns the label of a genuine proto-science. Whilst it could be argued that chemistry as a modern science began in the 17 th Century, where the scientific method and empiricism were applied, this modern science still had roots in the past. ![]() Whilst many ancient cultures studied the nature of substances and synthesized useful compounds, there was no scientific methodology to their approach and their studies were based upon accident, trial and error, or the quest for riches. ![]() 5/25/2023 0 Comments Moonlight by Ann Hunter![]() ![]() ![]() Nowhere in that scene does anyone say Aowyn has to stop talking completely. The deal she makes is not to talk about the deal she is making to save her brothers. Neither is Aowyn taking a vow of silence - wait, no, that is also misleading. The book does not seem to think that this would be a BIG FREAKING DEAL. That would leave you with the impression that the book acknowledges that no one notices, that the lack of noticing too might be mystical in nature. It would be misleading to say that when the princes disappear (having been turned into swans) no one notices. ![]() Time and time again things happen without consequence. The actual writing is good, it flows nicely and carries you along and doesn't drag. I think the best way to describe this book's failings is to compare it to a movie that is beautifully shot but utterly fails storywise. ![]() ![]() ![]() Le Guin & Her Cohort Wendell Berry Zadie Smith Parker Ross Macdonald & Margaret Millar Shel Silverstein Stanislaw Lem Stephen King Toni Morrison Ursula K.
